Night Sky Quarter Plate, 18cm

The Night Sky Quarter Plate is a small ceramic plate in deep matte black — eighteen centimetres on each side, two tall, with the slightly squared edges of a thali plate rather than a perfect round.

The matte black absorbs light evenly across the body. White rice, yellow dal, green sabzi all read sharper against it the way food does on a slate plate at a restaurant. Gloss would have created highlights that competed with the food; matte stays out of the way.

Eighteen centimetres is the right size for a side or starter — a roti and sabzi at a thali, a single dosa, a small portion of dessert, an appetiser plated for one. The proportion is built to sit alongside a dinner plate or to work alone for lighter meals.

Available in sets of 1, 2, 4, and 6 — sized for a single seat, a couple, a family, or a household that hosts.

A note on how it's made. Each plate is shaped, glazed, and finished by hand. Small variations in glaze depth and rim curve are part of how a handmade ceramic looks.
