The Folklore Collection
The Folklore collection is the one I started for myself.
I grew up surrounded by handcrafted blue-and-white ceramic — at mealtimes, in the kitchen, on shelves my grandmother rearranged every festival. In the traditional community I come from, ceramic wasn't décor; it was the everyday vocabulary of a household. Folklore is an attempt to put those pieces back into Indian homes — not as nostalgia, but as the most honest dinnerware I know how to make.
Every piece in Folklore starts as a blank stoneware body, handcrafted by legacy artisans and fired twice at over 1200°C in a food-safe, lead-free, cadmium-free, bone-ash-free glaze. Then the work that makes Folklore, Folklore begins. Each motif — dense florals, vines, cobalt-blue blossoms — is designed by the artisans we work with, for Claymistry, and produced as a ceramic decal. The artisans then apply the decals by hand, one at a time, aligning each piece individually before the final step: a third firing at high temperature, 12 to 24 hours longer than our standard range.
That third firing is what matters. The extra heat fuses the motif into the glaze itself, instead of sitting on top of it. You can't scratch it off with a knife. It doesn't fade in the dishwasher. It's what makes every Folklore piece microwave-safe and food-safe, and it's why we price this collection higher — the kiln hours alone are nearly double those of a standard plate.
What you'll find in this collection
- Dinner sets — four-, six-, and eight-piece configurations in hand-placed florals
- Mugs — classic coffee, tall latte, and chai cup sizes
- Serving bowls — 8" and 10" for dal, sabzi, biryani, and chaat
- Everyday bowls — katoris and cereal bowls to build or extend a set
- Limited pieces released in small batches — when a design sells out, it's retired
Folklore is the collection where we spend the most time per piece. That shows up in price — this is our premium tier — and in scarcity. Batches are small by design, because the decals are produced in limited runs and the third firing can only happen in small kiln loads.
Who buys Folklore
Collectors. Hoarders of designer tableware. Anyone who has ever bought a piece for a shelf before they bought it for a table. Folklore is for homes where the crockery cabinet gets as much care as the wardrobe, and where people serve chai to guests in the same mug they drink from alone.
Every piece is microwave and dishwasher-safe. The silky matte finish doesn't catch glare under a dining light, and the third-fire process means the motifs will outlast the plate.
Folklore — FAQs
What makes Folklore different from the rest of Claymistry?
Every Folklore piece is fired three times instead of two. The first two firings build and glaze the stoneware body — the same process as the rest of Claymistry. The third firing, unique to Folklore, fuses hand-placed motif decals into the glaze over 12 to 24 additional hours in the kiln. That extra heat is why the motif becomes part of the surface instead of sitting on top of it, and why the pieces are priced higher.
Are Folklore pieces safe for daily use?
Yes. Lead-free, cadmium-free, bone-ash-free. Microwave and dishwasher-safe. The third-fire process is specifically what makes these pieces food-safe — the motif is fused into the glaze, not sitting on top where it could leach or wear off. I designed Folklore to be used, not stored.
Will the motif fade or scratch off?
No. Because the third firing fuses the motif into the glaze itself, it behaves like the glaze does — it doesn't scratch off with cutlery, doesn't fade from repeated dishwasher cycles, and won't discolour from hot food.
Can I commission a custom Folklore set?
Yes, for sets of eight pieces or more. Email me with what you have in mind — a motif variation, a specific colorway within the blue-and-white palette, a larger dinner set configuration. Typical commission lead time is 6 – 8 weeks, since custom decals need to be designed, printed, and third-fired.
How do I know when new Folklore designs launch?
Sign up for Claymistry's email list — new Folklore releases are announced there first, usually two to three days before they go public. Designs sell out quickly.
