What Lead-Free Ceramic Means, and How to Check
Short answer: "Lead-free" is not a regulated label on ceramic tableware in India. Anyone can print it. What actually tells you whether a plate is safe is a glaze release test, which measures how much lead and cadmium move from the glaze into food under acidic conditions. This page explains what the phrase means, how that testing works, and the questions that get you a straight answer from a seller.
What "lead-free" actually means
The phrase gets used three different ways, and only one of them is meaningful to you at the dinner table.
- No lead in the raw glaze recipe. This is a statement about ingredients. It is the version most sellers mean, and it is the hardest for a buyer to verify, because you cannot see a recipe.
- No lead detected in the finished piece. This is a statement about the object after firing. It is closer to useful, but still incomplete, because lead can be present and stable, or absent and irrelevant.
- No meaningful lead release from the glaze into food. This is the one that matters. It measures what actually reaches your meal.
The third definition is the one that food-safety standards are built around, and it is the only one that survives contact with a bowl of sambar. A plate can be made with a lead-bearing glaze and still release almost nothing if it was formulated and fired correctly. A plate can also be made with a low-lead glaze and release more than it should if it was underfired. Ingredients alone do not settle the question. Release testing does.
Why the label alone means very little in India
Food-contact ceramic ware is meant to be assessed for lead and cadmium release, and ISO 6486 is the international standard that describes how. Nothing stops a seller from printing "lead-free" on a listing whether or not that assessment ever happened. There is no consumer-facing enforcement system for the phrase on Indian ceramic tableware, and no penalty attached to using it loosely. It has become marketing copy rather than a verified fact.
This is not a small gap. In 2025 the US Food and Drug Administration issued warnings covering 19 cookware and tableware products, largely imported from South Asia, after testing confirmed lead moving into food. Its guidance to households holding those products was to discard them. The concern is sharpest for children, who absorb a far larger share of ingested lead than adults do, roughly 40 to 50 percent against 3 to 10 percent.
Acidic food is what turns a latent problem into an active one. Tomato gravies, tamarind, lime, vinegar, and pickles draw more from a glaze surface than water or rice will. That is precisely why the standard test uses an acidic solution: it is the industry proxy for how Indian households actually cook.
How glaze safety is assessed
A release test is a physical procedure, not a paperwork exercise. In outline:
- The piece is filled with a mild acid solution under controlled temperature and time conditions set by the standard. Acetic acid is the usual medium.
- The solution is then analysed for how much lead and cadmium it picked up from the glaze surface.
- The result is compared against the limits in the standard, which vary by the shape of the article, since a deep bowl holds liquid against the glaze differently from a flat plate.
- The finding applies to that glaze on that body, fired that way. It does not automatically transfer to a different colour or a different firing schedule. This is why a serious answer is glaze-by-glaze rather than brand-wide.
Two details are worth knowing because they separate a real answer from a vague one. First, a laboratory can be accredited to run this test, and accreditation is about the lab's competence, not about the product passing. Second, a test report is not a certification. Ceramic tableware in India does not carry a consumer safety certification mark for lead release, so any seller using the word "certified" is either describing something else or overstating what they hold.

Seven questions to ask before you buy
You do not need technical vocabulary. You need answers that are specific rather than reassuring. A seller who has done the work can answer these in a sentence each.
- Has this glaze been tested for lead and cadmium release, or only the clay body? The glaze is the food-contact surface. A body test alone does not answer the question.
- Which standard was used? ISO 6486 is the usual reference for lead and cadmium release from ceramic ware. A seller who cannot name any standard has probably not tested.
- Was the test run on the finished, fired piece? Raw-material documentation from a glaze supplier is useful, but it is not the same as testing what you will eat from.
- Does the result cover this colour? Pigments differ. Reds, oranges and yellows have historically carried the most cadmium, so a result for a plain glaze does not speak for a bright one.
- Can I see the report? The answer should be yes, or a clear explanation of how to request it. Reluctance here is itself an answer.
- How often is it re-tested? Glaze batches change. A single test from several years ago describes a batch, not a practice.
- Is there bone ash in the body? Separate question, same principle of knowing what you are eating from. Bone china contains calcium phosphate derived from animal bone, typically 30 to 50 percent of the body, which matters to vegetarian households.
How to sanity-check tableware you already own
- Read the base. Manufacturer markings, an origin, or a materials note are all better signs than an unmarked piece.
- Be cautious with bright, hand-decorated and traditional pieces, especially older ones or those bought unbranded from local markets. Decorative and antique ware is not made to food-contact expectations.
- Watch for a dull, chalky or crazed surface. A glaze that has lost its gloss, or has a fine web of cracks, has a compromised surface and holds food residue.
- Retire anything visibly worn from acidic cooking. If a plate has gone patchy where curry sits, stop using it for food.
- Home test kits give you a flag, not a verdict. They are inexpensive and useful for screening. They are not lab-grade, and a negative result is not proof.
- Ask the brand. A company that cannot tell you what is in its glaze has told you something.

Frequently asked questions
What does lead-free ceramic actually mean?
Used precisely, it means the glaze does not release meaningful amounts of lead into food. Used loosely, which is more common, it means only that the seller believes there is no lead in the glaze recipe. The two are not the same, and only the first can be measured. Ask whether a release test was run rather than whether the piece is lead-free.
Is lead-free ceramic dinnerware regulated in India?
The phrase itself is not policed on consumer listings. Food-contact ceramic ware is expected to be assessed for lead and cadmium release, with ISO 6486 as the reference method, but there is no consumer-facing certification mark for it and no routine enforcement of the label. That is why the useful question is about evidence rather than wording.
How can I tell if my ceramic plates have lead?
Visually, you cannot. Bright, hand-decorated, unbranded or antique pieces carry more risk than plain, marked, modern ones, and a dull or crazed glaze is a reason to retire a plate from food use. A home lead-testing swab will flag high levels but cannot rule lead out. A release test at a laboratory is the only way to answer it properly.
Does lead leach more from certain foods?
Yes. Acidic foods draw more from a glaze surface than neutral ones, which is why tomato gravies, tamarind, lime, vinegar and pickles are the relevant case. Heat and long contact time increase it further. Standard release testing uses an acidic medium for exactly this reason.
Is cadmium a separate concern from lead?
Yes, and it is usually tested alongside lead. Cadmium compounds appear in red, orange and yellow ceramic pigments, so brightly coloured decoration is the typical source. Long-term exposure is associated with kidney and bone effects.
Is stoneware safer than bone china?
They are different questions. Bone china is a body type containing animal bone ash, typically 30 to 50 percent, which matters to vegetarian households on its own terms. Lead and cadmium risk sits in the glaze and decoration rather than the body, so either can be well made or poorly made. Judge the glaze evidence, and judge the body separately. Does a higher firing temperature make a glaze safer?
It helps, but it is not a guarantee on its own. Firing to a full vitrification range bonds the glaze to the body and closes surface porosity, which reduces what a glaze can give up. Formulation still matters, and so does consistency between batches. Temperature is one input, not the proof.
