How to Test Ceramic Plates for Lead at Home

You cannot test a ceramic plate for lead at home. There is no reliable home test for lead in a fired glaze. What you can do at home is inspect for the conditions that raise the risk, and then get a real answer from the brand: a laboratory test to ISO 6486 is the only thing that settles it.

This page explains what a home inspection can honestly tell you, why the home test kits sold for this do not work on glazed ceramic, and the one question that gets you a real answer. It is written for Indian kitchens, where daily cooking with tomato, tamarind, lemon and curd puts acidic food against glaze far more often than most Western guidance assumes.

Start here: the two checks that cost nothing

1. Look at how the decoration was applied. Run a fingernail across a painted or coloured area. If you can feel the edge of the pattern standing proud of the surrounding surface, the decoration sits on top of the glaze rather than sealed underneath it. On-glaze decoration is exposed to your food, your dishwasher and your scrubbing. Under-glaze decoration, applied before the final glaze layer goes on, is sealed beneath glass.

2. Look at the condition. A glaze that has crazed into fine cracks, chipped at the rim, gone rough or pitted, or visibly faded through years of washing is a compromised barrier. Whatever the original formulation, a broken glaze is more likely to release what is in it. Decorative or unbranded pieces, souvenir ware, and old inherited crockery are the pieces most worth inspecting.

Neither of these tells you what is in the glaze. They tell you which pieces are worth worrying about.

Why home lead test kits do not work on glazed ceramic

The swab-and-colour-change kits sold for lead testing were built and calibrated for flat, exposed painted surfaces such as walls and toys. Glazed ceramic is a fired, glass-like surface, and these kits were never designed to read it reliably.

That cuts both ways. A negative result does not mean the glaze is free of lead, so it cannot clear a piece. A positive result can be triggered by surface residue that has nothing to do with the glaze formulation, so it does not condemn one either. A test that can be wrong in both directions is not a test you can make a decision on. Treat home kits as unreliable for this specific purpose rather than as a cheap substitute for laboratory testing.

The check that actually settles it

The conclusive test is a laboratory one: a sample is exposed to an acidic solution under controlled conditions and the amount of lead and cadmium released is measured against defined limits. That method is ISO 6486, the international conformity test for lead and cadmium release from ceramic food-contact surfaces. India also has IS 9542 covering ceramic tableware more broadly.

You are unlikely to send your own dinner set to a laboratory. What you can do is make the brand answer for it. One email, one question: has this glaze been tested for lead and cadmium release at an accredited laboratory, and can you send me the report? A brand that tests can answer in a sentence and attach a file. A brand that has only printed a safety word on the packaging cannot, and that silence is your result.

Why the words on the listing do not settle it

Search any Indian marketplace and you will find safety wording printed on dinnerware from sellers of every size, most of whom have never had a glaze tested by anyone. The phrase "lead free" has become a listing keyword rather than a verified claim: easy to type, and impossible for a buyer to check unless the seller can produce a report behind it. What to do with dishes you already own

  • Move anything with visible on-glaze decoration, crazing or chips off daily food duty, particularly for hot and acidic dishes.
  • Be most cautious with unbranded decorative ware, souvenir pieces and bright red, orange or yellow glazes, colours historically more likely to have used lead or cadmium pigments.
  • Do not store acidic food, pickles, chutneys or citrus, long term in ceramic whose glaze you cannot vouch for.
  • Keep the pieces you cannot verify. Use them for dry snacks, decor or plants rather than throwing them out.
  • When you replace a piece, buy on the report rather than the wording.
