The 26 cm dinner plate
26 cm is the working standard for Indian dining. It gives enough rim to hold a wet sabzi away from the roti, and enough centre to serve rice without crowding. Anything smaller starts to feel tight once you add a second vegetable; anything larger tends to look empty and stack awkwardly in Indian kitchen cabinets.

- 20 cm: a dessert or bread plate. It sits between a quarter plate and a dinner plate, and most Indian households skip it because the 18 cm plate already does that job.
- 27 cm and 28 cm: a slightly larger dinner plate, most often found in bone china ranges. The extra centimetre or two is presentation rim, not usable surface. How many pieces are in a dinner set
Indian dinner sets are counted in pieces, not place settings, which is where the confusion starts. One set does not mean one plate. The piece count is the total number of individual items in the box, so a 24-piece set is 24 objects shared across six people, not 24 plates.

How many pieces should you buy

- Family of four: buy for six, not four. An 18-piece set gives you two spare settings, so a breakage does not leave the table mismatched.

How to measure a plate you already own
Measure straight across the top of the plate, rim edge to rim edge, through the centre. That outer diameter is the number every seller quotes. Do not measure the base or the inner well, both of which are smaller and will make a 26 cm plate read as roughly 20 cm.
If your tape is in inches, divide by 2.54 to convert: a 26 cm plate is 10.2 inches, an 18 cm quarter plate is 7.1 inches, and a 24 cm pasta bowl is 9.4 inches. Indian listings quote centimetres, imported listings often quote inches, and the same plate can appear under both.
